This Privacy Policy explains how SEO Institute HTML Checker (the “Extension”), provided by SEO Institute, handles information when it is used.
1. Overview
The Extension processes information only when the user starts an audit. Processing takes place primarily within the user’s browser.
SEO Institute does not operate a server for collecting webpage content, browsing history, or audit results. The Extension does not use developer-operated analytics, advertising, or tracking services, and it does not sell user data.
2. Information Handled by the Extension
To perform an audit requested by the user, the Extension may process:
- The URL and content of the currently selected webpage;
- HTML elements, metadata, links, scripts, headers, and other technical information associated with that webpage;
- URLs, HTTP response information, redirects, errors, and publicly accessible resources referenced by or related to the audited webpage;
- The user’s selected interface language; and
- Audit progress, settings, and results.
Webpages may incidentally contain personal, confidential, or sensitive information. The Extension is not designed to identify or collect such information. Complete webpage content is not intentionally retained after it is no longer required for the requested audit.
3. Network Requests
When necessary to complete an audit, the Extension may send GET or HEAD requests directly to the audited website and to publicly accessible resources or external URLs referenced by that website.
These requests do not include the user’s website sign-in cookies or authentication credentials. However, as part of normal internet communication, the receiving website may receive information such as the user’s IP address, browser User-Agent, request time, and requested URL. The receiving website handles this information according to its own privacy practices.
The Extension does not transmit webpage content, browsing history, or audit results to SEO Institute or to an analytics platform.
4. How Information Is Used
Information is used only to:
- Perform the audit initiated by the user;
- Display audit progress, results, and errors;
- Temporarily retain the audit state for the active browser tab; and
- Generate a locally downloaded report when requested by the user.
Information is not used for advertising, personal profiling, credit assessment, or purposes unrelated to the Extension’s disclosed single purpose.
5. Local Storage and Retention
The Extension uses Chrome local storage to save the selected interface language and the current tab’s audit state and results.
The language preference remains until the user changes it, clears the Extension’s data, or uninstalls the Extension. Audit information is temporary and is cleared or ceases to apply when the user resets the audit, navigates away, closes or switches the audited tab, clears the Extension’s data, or uninstalls the Extension.
Reports exported by the user are generated and downloaded locally. SEO Institute does not receive or retain copies of exported reports. The user controls how those files are stored, shared, and deleted.
6. Sharing and Sale of Information
SEO Institute does not sell, rent, trade, or disclose user data to advertising platforms, data brokers, or information resellers.
The only routine disclosure resulting from use of the Extension occurs when network requests are sent directly to websites or resources required for the user-requested audit, as described in Section 3. The Extension does not otherwise share webpage content, browsing activity, or audit results with third parties.
7. Chrome Permissions
The Extension uses Chrome permissions only as necessary to perform the user-requested audit:
- `activeTab` and `scripting` allow the Extension to process the currently selected webpage after the user starts an audit;
- `storage` saves the language preference and temporary audit state locally;
- `alarms` manages audit timing and stalled operations;
- `webRequest` observes requests initiated by the Extension so that relevant response and redirect information can be reported; and
- Host access allows the Extension to request publicly accessible URLs needed for the audit.
The Extension does not use these permissions to build a browsing history, monitor unrelated browsing activity, or alter ordinary website traffic.
8. Security and User Controls
The Extension applies reasonable safeguards, including local processing, credential-free background requests, restrictions on private-network targets, and limits on request duration and response size.
Users may prevent processing by not starting an audit. They may clear temporary audit information by resetting the audit, switching or closing the audited tab, clearing the Extension’s local data in Chrome, or uninstalling the Extension. Locally exported reports may be deleted through the user’s device.
Because SEO Institute does not normally receive or store audit information, it generally has no server-side audit data to access, correct, or delete.
9. Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the [Chrome Web Store User Data Policy](https://developer.chrome.com/docs/webstore/program-policies/limited-use), including the Limited Use requirements.
Information is used only to provide or improve the Extension’s disclosed single purpose and user-facing operation. It is not used for personalized advertising, data sales, or any prohibited purpose.
10. Changes to This Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated when the Extension’s data practices, permissions, applicable laws, or Chrome Web Store requirements change. The latest version will show the date of the most recent update. Any material change to data handling will be disclosed as required before the changed practice takes effect.
